Today’s Egret Reflection Blog looks at the history & healing properties of Druzies and where our fascination with the stone in jewellery pieces has come from. Druzies are a collection of tiny crystals that have formed within or on the surface of another mineral. They are delicate, beautiful and comparatively new to the jewellery scene. Until 10 years ago they were relatively unheard of in our stores and only really absently gazed at by gemmologists.
Druzies have many names, they can be called Druse, Drusy, Druzy or Drusie. Whatever you want to call them they all mean the same thing and they have become my new favourite accessories.
Druzies are forged when water carrying dissolved silica is rapidly forced onto a porous area of rock. This results in accelerated cooling causing the formation of miniature crystals on the surface or in the cavities of the rock. The most common type of Druzy is quartz but they are also found on most gemstones from agate to hematite; they are even known to have been found in meteorites!
Druzy crystals are quite commonplace, relatively inexpensive but beautiful to look at so it’s no wonder they are becoming a firm favourite in jewellery boutiques. They can easily be cut into various shapes and the process of electroplating them to make them brighter and more luminous is simple making them a versatile gem to work with.
The fascination of the stone comes from their snow crystal like appearance, they are wonderfully sparkly and have a really organic look to them. They make wonderful pieces of jewellery with their iridescent colours, natural shapes and the way they sparkle in the light. No two stones are the same and therefore no two pieces of jewellery are the same either, every stone is totally unique like a snowflake. Their natural beauty makes them a perfect pairing for any bohemian or elegant evening outfit. Try layering a long Druzy necklace with a winter cardigan for that boho chic look, or a pair of glistening Druzy earrings delicately draped towards the nape of the neck with your hair pinned back and your little black dress.
It’s a great way to add sparkle to and elegance to any ensemble. Druzies are as fascinating as they are be delicate. They are best suited for wearing as a necklace or earring set.
When choosing a Druzy piece of jewellery the quality is not only determined by weight, colour or clarity but also by the crystal size and the evenness of their coverage. Fake Druzy jewellery is made by using resin particles. They can be lovely, inexpensive and are easy to spot If you are looking out for them, the paint collects in the grooves and will reach all the way to the back and sides of the stone unlike natural Druzies.
Druzy is believed to be associated with peace, tranquillity, patience, intuition, and unconditional love. They amplify the body’s natural healing properties and strengthen the spirit. They also provide the balance necessary to avoid depression or unnatural feelings of fear or dread. Druzies open blocked energy and assist its wearer in finding his or her own inner light. The stones healing properties strengthen the circulatory and immune systems, and purifies the reproductive system. Druzies can also be useful for preventing infection.
